SPRING CLEANING: Protect your favourite styles

Leather Shoe Cleaning & Care

 

The sun is shining and so are our hopes for spring! It’s always sad to say goodbye to our favourite Rieker and Remonte boots for the season, but we have many new summer styles to celebrate!

Here are some cleaning tips for storing our products for the season. With our high-quality leather boots and shoes, you want to give them the best care. Read our cleaning tips and learn more about the types of leather you own, or if your shoes are made with vegan-friendly synthetic materials: what you can do to help prevent damage.

STEPS FOR PROTECTING LEATHER

1. PROTECT

Before you wear your Rieker and Remonte winter boots and shoes, it is highly suggested that you protect them with protector spray. By spraying your boots and shoes, you are limiting the chances of water, dirt, and salt damage. Please note the type of material and the protector spray; some spray may not be good for synthetic materials and may cause damage! It is important to pay close attention to which spray and which shoes you own. Also consider if the upper is full leather or partial, determining if the synthetic materials require the same care.

2. WEAR

When wearing your boots and shoes, try to limit damage by planning where you go and consider Rieker’s intended use of the product. For example, Rieker’s leather shoes cannot endure the same conditions as Rieker’s leather ankle boots. The lifted sole of a hiking boot prevents direct damage to where the leather upper and outsole meet. We know shoes are meant to be worn and puddles are tempting – especially with our TEX membrane that kicks moisture out, but save the jumping for excitement not the slush!

3. CLEAN

Now it’s time to put your boots and shoes away. At the end of the season, clean your boots and shoes before storage. Don’t worry, you will see them again! It’s important to understand which material your boots are. For smooth leather use lotion, for nubuck use cleaner, and for vegan-friendly synthetics use a damp cloth. You can read more about the type of material care below.

4. POLISH

Polishing your boots and shoes will require you to find a polish that matches the shade of your leather. We recommend asking your retailer for their input on matching the right shade. Gently rub the polish in circular motions to nourish the leather and enhance the colour.

5. PROTECT

Before storing your shoes, don’t forget to spray them again! Extra protector spray will help preserve the polish and rehydration of leather shoes, while also protecting against dust and climate.

Leather Finishes and Care

Nappa – full grain leather, soft and comfortable feel. What you need: Leather protector, leather cleaning lotion, and polish in the same colour as the shoe.

Nubuck – grain or smooth side of leather, it is buffed with an abrasive action giving a velvety feel. You can use a suede and nubuck or leather protector, clean using a suede and nubuck block.

Suede – the underside of leather that is buffed and brushed, suede and nubuck are similar so same products can be used to clean and protect. A suede brush works best for cleaning suede.

Aniline – leather treated with a clear aniline dye and wax finish. It will have a very high gloss finish but not patent. Patent care can be used so as not to dull the finish.

Reptiles – The skins of animals such as snake, crocodiles or other reptiles, or an embossed leather or synthetic material to look like reptile skin. Patent care is recommended.

Metallic/Pearlized – a finish applied to leather which gives the shoe a metal or pearl look. Patent care is recommended.

Patent leather – leather or synthetic which have a surface coating of PVC or polyurethane to give it a very high gloss finish. This finish reduces the ability of leather to breathe. Patent care is recommended.

Oily Nubuck – nubuck with heavy oiling. Oiled leather protector is recommended and a suede/nubuck block or brush to lift pile.

A Style That Lasts

Have you ever had a shoe that you preserved – you only wear them on occasion, and when you return home you put them safely back into their box? When we heard from a customer that they’ve maintained their shoes for years – we immediately welcomed the feedback and had to share her story.

 

Rieker is known for longevity and comfort, and a style that fits into your everyday outfits. Many customers will wear their Rieker shoes for long walks, pack them for vacation, and dedicate them to the office. It’s no shock when we hear customers use their Riekers everyday – but we are still flattered! Our shoes, sandals, slip-ons, and boots are made with lasts moulded specifically for a roomier, flexible, and shock-absorbing feel.

 

This Rieker’s Regina sandal (608B9) in smoke can be worn with so many outfits. It is so comfortable, yet looks a little dressy due to the beading! – Karen Schmidt 

 

Karen Schmidt’s commitment to her sandals has lasted many years. The elegant beading and easy-stretch fastener is perfect for everyday wear. She’s loved the compliments and the way her Riekers make her feel confident and comfortable when she puts them on. Karen even repaired the sandals when they started to show signs of age. “I have received so many compliments and worn them with so many outfits, that I stretched the elastic and sewed the extra down.“ 

 

Customers with similar experiences have gone through the process of asking for recommended repair shops nearby. When you find a shoe that looks and feels great, why not wear them everywhere you go and make sure they last as long as possible? It’s hard to say goodbye to a shoe that’s been with you for so long, especially when they’re easy to throw on and go great with many outfits.

 

The spring/summer style 608B9-45 was manufactured in 2011 and was discontinued in 2018. Karen’s search continued online and in stores. She was devastated when she visited a store and discovered there were none left in stock. But don’t worry, there was success when Karen visited another of our retailers: Rieker Par Le Pacha. 

 

After the long search, we are happy to hear that Karen found the sandal she loves – again! “Now that the sole is worn flat and the elastic has stretched even more, I finally found that exact same shoe and wore my new pair yesterday!” We share in her excitement that she has found them again and are pleased to hear that the purchase brought her a reason to celebrate.

I Knew I’d See You Again

A customer experience piece. An article about a visit to a store and the hard decision to walk away from shoes, with a grand-daughters attempt at a reunion.

 

In June 2019, my family and I drove to Midland to attend the Buttertart festival. King Street lined itself with vendors and the buzzing excitement of finding tasty tarts, pies, and shopping deals. Retail storefronts piled with customers who searched for more than something to satisfy their sweet tooth. The shoe deals advertised at Shoes to Boot were enough to satisfy the cravings and appeal to the inner shoe lover that is my mom, aunt, and grandmother.

“Try them on, it doesn’t hurt.” Mom called to my Nonna, who held a red polka-dotted heel in her hand like a prize.

“It’s beautiful,” Nonna’s broken English extended the vowels of her excitement. She circled the sandal in her hands and examined the details of the heel. “Look at the finish,” a thumb ran over the brown stained outsole.

“Ma, if you like it just try it on.” Zia rolled her eyes, but inspected a flat shoe of her own find.

“Just ask for a 36,” Mom looked around, craning her head to see over the crowd. “Want me to get someone?”

“No, no, it’s okay.” Nonna slid her foot into the sample shoe. Her beige stocking covered toes peeped from the ends of the red polka dot sandal. When her foot nudged enough forward, she leans on an ankle to show us the style. The black bow on full display. “Beeea-u-tiful.” She exclaimed.

“They’re cute,” Zia confirmed.

“I don’t need them,” Nonna shook her head and read the price at the bottom. A shaking finger trailed over the sales tag. She never wanted to spend her money. Her treat to herself were the leftover cookies she carried in a napkin in her purse.

“If you want them, get them. When are you coming back?” Mom tried her best to convince my Nonna, but Nonna still refused. She left the store carrying a bag of only buttertarts, Mom and Zia in tow with their new shoe boxes.

 

I haven’t seen Nonna in weeks and I know the separation at Easter made her sad. Our visits are scattered, a walk-by greeting from the edge of her patio while I shiver and she stands in the doorway trying to convince me to come inside. She leaves the door open for a moment then returns with a cloth covered pot. Broth she made for soup. She always transforms her groceries into meals for us to bring home. Mom shakes her head but accepts the food, knowing there’s no use in trying to fight her on it.

Mother’s Day is next Sunday and I don’t want to enter the store for flowers. I browse online for delivery services, trying to think of something Nonna wouldn’t refuse. No matter what I buy her, for any occasion, she tells me she doesn’t need it.

I sigh and search my way through the internet, typing in Mother’s Day Gifts for Grandma. Nothing comes up, and when I decide to forfeit the hunt, I turn to Facebook. An ad for Rieker shoes shows up on my newsfeed scroll. I click the link to browse the collection, feeding the shoe lover gene I inherited. Then, by only chance, I recognize a black spotted sandal.

This has to come in red. This has to be the company.

Rieker Canada was the brand we found in the retailer shop, out of town, almost a year ago. I scroll and click the sandal tab, giving up to search for the shoe style number instead.

There it is. The shoe that Nonna loved, but never treated herself to.

With a size chart check and free shipping, I bought the shoes that would suit her better than flowers. The smile she wore when she exclaimed, “they’re comfortable, it’s like I’m not wearing shoes!” was enough to remind me that Nonna may not have needed new shoes, but she wanted them.
